Famous Churches In The Philippines
The San Agustin Church in Manila built between 1587 and 1606, is the oldest existing church in the Philippines and the only building left intact after the destruction of Intramuros during the Battle of Manila.
The Church lies inside the walled city of Intramuros, in Manila. It is the first European stone church to be built in the Philippines designed in Spanish architectural structure. The legacies of the Spanish Conquistadors “ Juan de Salcedo, Levezares, Martín de Goiti, and Miguel López de Legazpi who are buried and laid to rest in a tomb, underneath the church located in the easternmost chapel.
It was constituted in 1993 as one of the four Baroque Churches of the Philippines which were proclaimed by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre.
San Agustin Church is a favorite wedding place for Manila’s notables during weekends and what a beautiful place to get married, in the oldest surviving church in the Philippines. The church remains under the care of the Augustinians who founded it.
Quiapo Church is one of Manila’s best known landmarks. A Catholic parish since 1586. It is a 1933 replacement of an older structure destroyed by fire. It is the home of prominent for the Black Nazarene, a large black wooden statue of Christ bearing the cross believed to be miraculous. The life size statue, carved from ebony, this crucifix was carved in Mexico and was first brought to the Philippines from Mexico by Spanish galleon in 1767. It is also known as the Quiapo Day and celebrated every January 9th of the year. Thousands of thousands of people parade through the streets to touch and witness the statue where it is supposed to produce a miraculous effect.
The Basilica Minore de San Sebastian or well-known as San Sebastian Church is noted for its architectural features. It was completed in the year 1891. An example of the revival of Gothic architecture in the Philippines, it is the only all-steel church or basilica in Asia. Recognized by the UNESCO World Heritage Site for its Architectural Designs. In the year 1973 the Philippine Government proclaimed and named the church as a National Historical Landmark.
